Counselling for Children and Young People

My name’s Joe and I am an accredited Child and Adolescent Psychotherapeutic Counsellor.

I offer in-person private counselling for children aged 5-19 years old.

I work from a counselling space in Dunton, Central Bedfordshire, which means my counselling services are accessible to people in areas such as:

  • North Hertfordshire (Letchworth, Hitchin, Baldock, Royston)

  • Central Bedfordshire (Biggleswade, Potton, Sandy, Shefford, Stotfold)

  • Bedford (and surrounding areas)

  • South Cambridgeshire (Gamlingay,Bassingbourn, Melbourn)

I hold a Postgraduate Diploma in Child and Adolescent Psychotherapeutic Counselling from the University of Cambridge.

I have worked in children’s mental health for over 8 years in various roles and have extensive experience working therapeutically with children and young people of all ages.

I support children and young people with a wide range of emotional and mental health needs, including those with special educational needs and disabilities.

I have practiced as a counsellor in education, charity and private settings. Alongside my counselling practice, I am a Service Manager at a local mental health charity, leading a countywide counselling service for children.

I am registered with both the United Kingdom Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP) and the Universities Psychotherapy and Counselling Association (UPCA). I hold a full clinical membership with both of these professional bodies.

I hold an Enhanced Child and Adult DBS check.

About Me

Young Person

“I saw Joe for a year and he helped me a lot. I felt I could speak about anything with him, without any judgement. He was patient and understanding. I have gained confidence since starting counselling and now have less anxious episodes”

How I Work

As a counsellor, I provide a safe therapeutic relationship that enables young people to understand and explore their emotions, experiences and feelings.

I facilitate an accepting environment where children and young people can process any challenges they may be experiencing, supporting their development.

I believe that the in-depth relationship I build collaboratively with my clients is central to the therapeutic benefit of counselling.

My therapeutic approach is integrative, drawing from several key theoretical orientations. My core theoretical framework, which informs my practice, includes attachment theories, social neuroscience, psychodynamic theory, Gestalt theory, and ecological systems theory.

I believe that using creative and playful modes of expression can support an individual in giving their feelings a safe and protected way of being communicated. I encourage using creative methods when they can be of benefit to my clients and these are always on offer in my counselling room.

Depending on the age of the child or young person I am working with, I will work with their parents/carers as part of the counselling work, with their consent.

Parent

“Joe is extremely friendly and very considerate by nature. He creates a trustful environment that feels nothing but safe and calm, where his clients can open up without fear of judgment.”
